Biodiversity Presentations
Inspiring Action
Kaikōura is a biodiversity hotspot renowned for its wildlife, classed as a global marine mammal and seabird capital. The region is home to unique species, many of which are threatened. Presentations cover wildlife encountered in Kaikōura, threats species face, and how to drive collective change.
Guests will also learn about the Trust’s projects, including the vision to implement a world-class wildlife hospital via Project WellBird, alongside critical conservation services. Wildlife rescue and rehabilitation is a crucial conservation tool, providing emergency care for injured and ill native species suffering from human related impacts, facilitating recovery and release.
Beyond aiding at-risk wildlife directly via emergency response and preventative measures, the aim is to move people from awareness to action. Our mission is to educate and inspire attitude shifts, focused on guardianship and advocacy, to enhance protection of the region’s marine ecosystem — a site of international importance. The Trust is hopeful of a future where all communities care about environmental wellbeing, and embrace their part in safeguarding wildlife and wild spaces for the next generation.
The Trust views its efforts as an investment in species preservation and community good will, by meeting an unfulfilled need and serving a critical role in environmental sustainability. Conservation involves empowering people to participate — as we always like to say, “caring for nature is everyone’s responsibility.”
Sustainability Education
Biodiversity presentations primarily focus on marine life and ocean health to raise awareness — highlighting key threats, focusing on conservation solutions, community initiatives, mitigating human impacts, alleviating known pressures, climate action, driving genuine sustainability, inspiring hope and action.
The Trust is proud to partner with travel providers such as Contiki (Make Travel Matter Experiences) and AAT Kings (New Zealand Uncovered and Down Under Tours), which manage their environmental and social impact through sustainability strategies focused on people, planet and wildlife. The Trust values corporate responsibility and a holistic ethos, focused on sustainable travel and stewardship.
The Trust hosts hundreds of biodiversity presentations annually as a supplier for regular travel providers, and one-off activities for educational providers (e.g. universities). As these are client or tuition based programmes, presentations are a service which carry an associated fee for our volunteer managed registered charity.
The Trust provides free presentations to schools and community organisations on an ad hoc basis. The Trust engages with St Josephs School, Kaikoura Suburban School, Hapuku School, Kaikoura Primary School and Kaikoura High School on request; whilst presenting on invite to groups such as Forest & Bird Youth, Kiwi Conservation Club, Kaikoura Lions Club, Seaward Kaikoura Lions Club, Summer Wine, Fly Safe Hutton’s Shearwaters; and community events (Kaikoura Museum). The Trust also participates as a speaker at wildlife conferences.
